To authors, publishers, photographers and others, we would be very grateful if you would consider giving your permission to reproduce your texts, photograph or illustration free of charge. Permissions are usually placed  in the right-hand column in the relevant text, or under pictures.

All the text that is produced for (articles, original material with comments, digitilised sources, encyclopaedic texts) may for non-commercial use be printed, downloaded, cited and used when the name of the author and the publisher ( is clearly indicated.  The material may be used for non-commercial purposes such as teaching, research and private use. If you wish to use the material for commercial purposes or publishing, then please contact the Editor and Web Manager Nicola Witcombe.

Please note that full copyright to e.g. the pictures and published text does not belong to, but we have just been given permission to use them for the website. Importantly, this permission does not extend to use by others with respect to publishing and/or commercial use. Any other use not permitted here requires permission from the original rights holder(s). Questions about rights and use of the material for other use, such as, public use of or publication elsewhere, must be directed to the appropriate rights holder(s)(e.g. author/publisher/archives/photogapher etc).

We have tried to identify and obtain permission from all the rights holders of original sources and illustrations that we have used on the website. If there are rights holders that we have not been able to find, they are very welcome to contact us. If we have violated copyright in anyway, it was involuntary and unintentional.
