Far from being fixed, contested Baltic identities have been used instrumentally to further political goals, or to capture the zeitgeist of an era. The region cannot be not objectively and geographically defined, but is a changing story that reflects the needs and challenges of the times in which it is created. Whether Polish identity aligns with the Baltic Sea region or not is a good example of this flux.Marta GrzechnikBaltic Sea RegionCooperationArcticDenmarkFinlandSwedenCultureCultureArticleThe Borders of the NordicsMarta Grzechnik17115357601711535760news-8992Fri, 22 Mar 2024 10:11:00 +0100NNL Pod 15: What is the New Nordic Lexicon podcast series about? https://nordics.info/nnl/show/artikel/nnl-pod-15-the-new-nordic-lexicon-mash-up-podcastListen to a whistlestop tour covering the last 14 podcasts, touching down in Aarhus, Stockholm, Oslo, and Helsinki, and featuring clips from podcasts where young people put questions to researchers on topics of the day.Daniela Lange AndersenNicola WitcombePodcast Series 5Daniela Lange Andersen and Nicola Witcombe17110986601711098660news-8954Tue, 19 Mar 2024 11:29:00 +0100Film: The Ocean and the Baltic Sea Region https://nordics.info/nnl/show/artikel/film-the-ocean-and-the-baltic-sea-regionWatch a film about the ground-breaking book 'The Sea is Blue' by Sylvia Earle and how it has inspired calls for ocean literacy in the Baltic Sea Region. Already with the framework of the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) in 1974, it was recognised that regional solutions were necessary to combat environmental degradation in the region. Additional threats are now posed due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Baltic Sea states (without Russia) still seek environmental progress for this complex ecosystem, arguably building on a legacy that stretches back to the 12th century. The concept of ecocultural identity combines ecology and culture, and recognises that sociocultural aspects of our identities are inseparable from ecological ones. Multi-level governance, cross-sectoral activities, and trans-boundary threats all testify to this interconnectedness.Marta SkorekBaltic Sea RegionCooperationDenmarkFinlandSwedenOutlookThe Nordics in the WorldMarta Skorek17096277001709627700
