Meet the students!

Emma studies European and Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki and has also written an article for the New Nordic Lexicon called The Different Meanings of the Kalevala

NNL Pod 5: Does reality live up to the Nordics' reputation when it comes to gender equality?

This is the fifth of our podcasts for the New Nordic Lexicon where students get the chance to put questions to researchers. In this episode, students Emma Healey from the University of Helsinki and Victoria Austveg from the University of Oslo speak to Cathrine Holst, Professor in Philosophy of Science and Democracy at Oslo University. Nicola Witcombe, who is editor of nordics.info based at Aarhus University, also joins the discussion.

Podcast

The Nordic Region is often lauded as exemplary when it comes to gender equality, but each Nordic country has its strengths and weaknesses. This episode is about perspectives on mainly male/female gender paradigms in the Nordic countries and particularly Norway. We will be looking at how gender issues are influenced from outside, and how the Nordics influence, or are seen, by the surrounding world. The participants also have the opportunity to share some good gender equality examples from their own lives (30 mins, in English):

Meet the researcher!

Cathrine Holst did her PhD at the University of Bergen. She has been a visiting scholar in Germany, the US, the UK and Italy. She has worked in a number of processes that link gender equality policy and research, such as, the Norwegian Public Inquiry Commission on Gender Equality (Likestillingsutvalget), and the project 'The influence of experts on public policy' financed by the Norwegian Research Council.

NNL Pod 6: What are the challenges to gender equality policymaking in the Nordics?

In this episode, students from Helsinki and Oslo Universities, Victoria Austveg and Emma Healey, and editor of nordics.info Nicola Witcombe speak again to Cathrine Holst from the University of Oslo.

This episode builds on the last one, but focuses more on policymaking, gender segregation and equal pay.
